Planning Ahead for the Holiday Stretch

Somewhere around the time the Halloween candy shows up on grocery store shelves, the calendar starts filling up. There are costumes to sort out, a Thanksgiving menu to think about, and maybe a relative or two already asking who's hosting this year. For anyone in treatment, the holiday season brings more to plan around, and late October is the perfect time to get ahead of it.

Here in Arizona, this is also the stretch of the year we've all been waiting for. The mornings finally cool off, patio season is back, and weekends start filling with fall festivals and family get-togethers. A little planning now can help you enjoy more of it, from trick-or-treat night through New Year's Day.

A great first step is calling our office before the holiday scramble begins. November and December are busy months for everyone, and appointment times fill up quickly as families work around travel and time off. Reaching out even a few weeks early gives our team more flexibility to find times that fit your plans. If you already know the dates you'll be traveling or hosting, have those handy when you call so we can work around them together.

From there, it helps to map out the season before committing to plans. Sit down with a calendar and mark your known treatment dates first, including appointments, labs, infusions, and any days you tend to need extra rest afterward. Once those are in place, you can build holiday plans around them instead of squeezing them in at the last minute. Many of our patients find that seeing the whole season at once makes it easier to decide which gatherings matter most and where there's room to say yes.

A few more ideas that can make the weeks ahead feel more manageable:

  • Share your calendar with family. When the people closest to you know your treatment dates ahead of time, they can plan around them, and you won't have to explain your schedule at every gathering.
  • Save your best days for your favorite traditions. If the day after treatment is usually slower, keep it open and plan bigger celebrations for the days you tend to feel strongest.
  • Choose what matters most. Not every party or event needs a yes. Handing out candy from the porch still counts as celebrating Halloween, and a smaller Thanksgiving can be every bit as meaningful.
  • Talk with us before you travel. If you're heading out of town, let our team know early so we can go over timing, prescriptions, and anything else you'll want to plan for. Keeping medications in the bag you carry, along with a current medication list and our office number, can make any trip feel easier.
  • Hand off the holiday to-do list. Shopping, cooking, and decorating are all easy things for loved ones to help with. Letting someone else take on the turkey this year leaves more energy for the moments you'll want to remember.

A little planning in October means more room in the upcoming months for the people and traditions you love. If you have questions about your treatment schedule or want help working around upcoming plans, know that our team is always happy to talk it through with you.
